Sound business reasons for implementing SHEQ/ISO

It is not always possible to exactly determine the Rand value benefits of implementing SHEQ/ISO.  That being said, these calculations can be done.

It is - in our view - more important for management and staff to understand - even in non-complex layman's terms - the benefits of adopting this management system.

When these benefits for your company are explained, deliberated and discussed, it is best to do it by firstly by principle, meaning Quality (ISO9001), Environment (ISO14001) and Health & Safety (OHSAS18001).  Secondly, one can list benefits per group affected, those being:

  1. the company in general,
  2. the staff of the company - at ALL levels in the organization,
  3. regulatory stakeholders and interest/pressure groups,
  4. the end users/customers/clients,
  5. suppliers & contractors and then of course
  6. society in general, the world we live in and the one our children have to live in.

The benefits of Quality Management/ISO9001

Below we will briefly outlines these benefits, whether perceived, actual, entrenched, underlying or (less easily explainable) monetary:

  1. Improved product and service quality will increase sales to existing markets.
  2. Improved product and service quality can open up new markets, increase sales from the tender process and can even lead to exporting products.
  3. Being ISO certified has a benefit in that it helps to increase a company's brand value.  This, in turn, can become a marketing tool and give a certified company the competitive edge over competitors.
  4. It gives shareholders and interest groups the necessary confidence that the company is internationally competitive.  This can attract additional investments, from both existing and new shareholders.
  5. Through the enhancement of service quality, companies can shield themselves against (or at least be prepared for) the Consumer Protection Act and its implications (i.e. claims, even civil action, etc.).
  6. And several more ...

The benefits of Environmental Management/ISO14001

Below we will briefly outlines these benefits, whether perceived, actual, entrenched, underlying or (less easily explainable) monetary:

  1. Reduction in the environmental affects caused not only by the company, but by the industry in which the company operates.  Class action law suits are no longer just a phenomenon in the USA.
  2. Compliance to environmental legislation, of which the non-compliance can lead to imprisonment of and/or a hefty fine for the company's most senior executive - in his/her PERSONAL capacity.
  3. Potential civil liabilities, i.e. where a community can claim against a company polluting their drinking water or land used for agricultural purposes.  This not only has a monetary element, but can damage the company's brand.
  4. Stakeholder pressure (i.e. shareholders) and external judgement (Green Scorpions, Blue scorpions, Green Peace, etc.) can be minimised by implementing an Environmental Management System or getting ISO14001 accreditation.
  5. Savings in operational budgets, i.e. insurance premiums.  The latter can be reduced if the company can proof that it's Environmental Management System reduces the risks of insurance claims against the company.
  6. And several more ...

The benefits of Health & Safety Management /OHSAS18001

Below we will briefly outlines these benefits, whether perceived, actual, entrenched, underlying or (less easily explainable) monetary:

  1. Securing a competitive position in that the company is known for looking after the health and safety not only of its employees, but also external parties.
  2. Improving its social responsibility in that the company is known for health and safety initiatives.
  3. Limited resources, such as water, are better managed by the company and thus become a cheaper resource in the production process.
  4. The company does not experience trade barriers (national and internationally) due to its conformance to Health & Safety standards/OHSAS18001.
  5. Cost savings can be incurred, for example treated effluent water can be re-used in the production phase.
  6. And several more ...

The above is but a few examples of benefits which companies can enjoy when they implement the basic concepts of SHEQ and/or if they aim for ISO/OHSAS certification.

A lot more reasons and explanations of such reasons are covered in our training programmes.
